Titled "burlesque B," this 1880 color woodcut poster was registered for copyright under J.E. Jackson's name, and the letter may mark it as one of several related sheets. Burlesque was a popular late nineteenth-century entertainment that mixed parody, music, and spectacle, and touring companies relied on large posters like this one to announce their shows on town streets and billboards. Color woodcut was a labor-intensive method, so the bold outlines and flat areas of ink reflect the skill of its period. At about 210 by 107 centimeters, the sheet was built to be read from across the street.
