This lithograph carries a New York imprint: H.A. Thomas printed it at his studio on Broadway in 1879, a few years after W.S. Gilbert's burlesque comedy *Engaged* opened in London in 1877. Gilbert's play satirizes mercenary courtship and the money troubles of its characters, and its humor traveled well to American stages. The poster bears the signature "Vic. Arnold," which points to the artist behind the design, while the bold, text-heavy layout reflects how American printers promoted touring and local productions of the period.
