At the Washington, D.C., auto show held March 3 to 10, 1917, automobile dealers and manufacturers filled the exhibit space for a week of public viewing, and the photograph records that event as one of the National Photo Company's commercial views of the capital. The show reflects a period when the automobile was shifting from a luxury novelty toward an everyday purchase for city buyers. It opened only weeks before the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, a reminder that peacetime consumer displays were soon overtaken by wartime priorities.
