Westcott cars, built by a Springfield, Ohio, manufacturer that sold touring cars and sedans to the middle market, are the subject of this picture, shown at Washington's auto show in the week of March 3 to 10, 1917. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded Washington life and events for decades, made many such views, and its negatives now belong to the Library of Congress. Auto shows of the period let dealers display new models to prospective buyers, and this one opened only weeks before the United States entered World War I in April 1917, when automobile production and sales were about to be shaped by the war effort.
