Racing automobiles around the nation's capital may seem an unlikely subject, yet this 1922 print documents auto racing in or near Washington, D.C., during a decade when speed contests drew large crowds across the country. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded local news and events in the 1910s and 1920s, made the image, and its collection now belongs to the Library of Congress. Photographs from this period are useful for understanding how automobiles, still fairly new, became a major public spectacle, and how the mix of mechanical experiment and popular entertainment shaped the sport.
