The title "Absoraks" is an older English spelling of the name the Crow people use for themselves, Apsáalooke, which is also where the Absaroka Range and the Absaroka County name come from. Edward S. Curtis made this portrait around 1905 as part of his multivolume *The North American Indian*, which aimed to document Native peoples in photographs and written accounts before what he saw as a vanishing way of life. Curtis's studio-style sittings often combined posed portraiture with traditional dress and props, so the picture reflects his choices as much as the sitter's everyday life.
