Novelist William Faulkner is the subject of this December 1954 portrait by Carl Van Vechten, a photographer known for his sittings with writers, performers, and other public figures. Faulkner, who lived most of his life in Oxford, Mississippi, had won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1949, and his novels built on the fictional Yoknapatawpha County. The gelatin silver print belongs to Van Vechten's celebrity portrait series, which reached the Library of Congress through his estate in 1966.
