Grizzly bears, called silvertips for the pale tips on their fur, are the subject here, photographed in Yellowstone National Park around 1929. The picture comes from the work of J.E. Haynes, the Montana photographer whose studio in Yellowstone's Mammoth Hot Springs area supplied park scenes and wildlife views to visitors for decades. By the late 1920s, bears were a familiar draw for tourists, and the park was still working out how people and bears should share the same roads and campgrounds. The record's copyright notation shows the photograph was registered under Haynes's name, a common practice for commercial views of the period.
