A 1928 team portrait of a boxing squad labeled "G.U.," an abbreviation the record does not expand, most likely refers to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. The picture survives as a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's schools, sports and public life in the 1910s and 1920s. Collegiate boxing was a popular campus sport at the time, and team photographs like this one recorded athletes and coaches for school publications and local newspapers. Streaks and blemishes across the glass come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings, not from the photographer's work.
