Young women pose as a rifle team at a school identified as Central, photographed on November 9, 1922, at a time when marksmanship was still widely seen as a male pursuit. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio, made the picture as part of its work documenting schools, public life and city streets in the early twentieth century. Rifle shooting was a popular school and community activity in the 1920s, and girls' teams were gradually becoming part of school athletics. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes on the glass negative, which come from natural deterioration of its original coating.
