Diana's Baths is one of the smaller pools in the terraced travertine formations at Mammoth Hot Springs, a feature that set this card apart from the many views of the park's larger terraces. The stereograph is number 102 in a series of 122 Yellowstone views issued by the publisher William Isaac Marshall in 1876, just four years after Congress made Yellowstone the first national park. Mammoth Hot Springs is built by hot mineral water that deposits calcium carbonate as it cools and flows over the slopes, slowly shaping the pale, stepped pools. Stereo cards like this one were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which fused the two slightly offset images into a single view with depth.
