Diana's Baths, a set of pools among the travertine terraces at Mammoth Hot Springs, is the subject of this 1876 stereograph card. The terraces form as hot mineral water carries dissolved calcium carbonate to the surface, where it cools and leaves layers of pale stone that build up into stepped formations over time. The card is number 101 in a series of 122 Yellowstone views issued by publisher William I. Marshall, part of a wave of photography that helped publicize the region a few years after Congress made it the nation's first national park in 1872. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical images merge into a single three-dimensional scene.
