Few attractions in the capital of the 1910s drew crowds like a track built for speed, and this glass negative records one, titled simply Speedway, Washington, D.C. The National Photo Company produced a vast body of views of the city in the years between about 1909 and 1923, sold as postcards and souvenirs to visitors who wanted pictures of local sights and novelties. The streaks and blemishes across the plate come from natural deterioration in the original coatings, not from the scene itself.
