The Champlain Apartments, a residential building in Washington, D.C., is the subject of this view, which dates from roughly 1909 to 1923. It is one of the glass negatives made by the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital's streets, buildings, and public life in the early twentieth century. The collection was given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the image, which come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion on the glass.
