St. Mary's Orphanage is the subject of this glass negative from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed Washington streets, churches, and public buildings in the years before 1925. Orphanages of that era were often run by religious or private charities and served as both shelter for children without families and a visible sign of local charitable work. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947, and its streaks and blemishes come from the gradual breakdown of the original coating, which gives the image a softened, weathered quality.
