The numbers in this title, 2201 through 7, suggest a run of houses on Champlain Street, a residential block in Northwest Washington rather than a monument or public building. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed streets and buildings across the city in the early twentieth century, made views like this one for the public, offering a record of everyday domestic architecture in the years just after World War I. The glass itself is worth a look: the record notes streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which give the image a mottled, weathered quality.
