A Hupmobile automobile is the subject here, and the record dates it to 1921, though its Washington, D.C. location comes from unverified data supplied with the negative. The Hupp Motor Car Company of Detroit built these mid-priced cars from 1909 until 1940, and the model was a common sight on American roads in the years after World War I. The negative belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a commercial studio that photographed the capital's streets, buildings and residents from about 1906 to 1936. Its large glass plate shows some streaks and blemishes from age and deterioration in the original coatings.
