The record gives only the address, 609 12th Street Northwest, so this view centers on one ordinary building on a downtown Washington street in the early 1920s. Twelfth Street ran through the city's commercial and government core, where offices, shops and homes stood side by side. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed Washington's streets and buildings in the early twentieth century, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Faint streaks on the glass are signs of aging in its coating, not features of the scene.
