The Raleigh Hotel in Washington, D.C., stood at Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Street NW, a short walk from the White House, and this glass negative records it in the years before the building was rebuilt. The National Photo Company, which made and kept this negative, photographed Washington streets and landmarks for sale to visitors and residents in the early twentieth century. The date is an estimate based on neighboring negatives, and the surface shows streaks and blemishes from the aging of the original coating, which lends the image a soft, weathered character.
