The New Raleigh stood on Pennsylvania Avenue, where a cluster of large hotels served the congressmen, lobbyists, and out-of-town visitors who crowded the route between the Capitol and the White House in the early 1900s. Its guests came to the capital for business or sightseeing, and the building's bulk and facade stood out among the commercial blocks along the avenue. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its views of American cities, landmarks, and scenery. Because the negative survives, it preserves the hotel's architecture and the street scene of its day in fine detail.
