The New Raleigh was a hotel at the corner of 12th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, a prominent address near the center of the capital and a short walk from the Federal Triangle and the Treasury. Hotels like this one served visiting politicians, lobbyists and out-of-town businessmen, and their lobbies and façades were often photographed as symbols of a growing city. This glass-plate negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely in the years before and after 1910 to document American cities and landmarks for color and print sales. The building was later demolished, so the negative now stands as a record of a streetscape that no longer exists.
