The funeral shown here was held for Thomas R. Marshall, Woodrow Wilson's vice president from 1913 to 1921, at the Willard Hotel in Washington on June 2, 1925, the day after he died in the capital. The hotel sits a short walk from the White House, and the service drew attention from officials and the public who had known Marshall, a former Indiana governor remembered for his dry humor. This National Photo Company glass negative records the occasion as the city's commercial photographers documented it. Its surface streaks, a result of age, are a reminder of the fragile materials used to preserve such scenes.
