The Willard Hotel stood at 14th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, a short walk from the White House, and for decades it was one of the capital's best-known gathering places for politicians, diplomats and visitors. Its lobby was a popular meeting ground, and the hotel is often credited in popular accounts with giving the word "lobbyist" its association with people who buttonhole officials. This glass negative was made by the National Photo Company, which documented Washington scenes in the early 1920s, and it entered the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. The streaks and blemishes visible on it come from natural deterioration of the original coatings.
