The Arlington Hotel stood on Lafayette Square, across from the White House, and this glass negative records it around 1920 to 1921. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington streets and buildings for decades, made the image, and it entered the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. The title comes from unverified data on the negative sleeve, and the date rests on comparison with other negatives from the same range. Streaks and blemishes from natural deterioration of the original coating are visible, so fine detail may be softened.
