The Arlington Hotel was a fixture of downtown Washington in the early twentieth century, a place where out-of-town visitors and officials often stayed. The National Photo Company produced thousands of views of the city's buildings and streets, many of which were sold as postcards, so this image reflects the crisp, documentary style of its commercial work. Dated between 1920 and 1921 and made on an 8 by 6 inch glass plate, the negative may show streaks and clouding from the deterioration of its original coating, which can soften some details of the facade.
