Few hotels in the capital sat closer to the center of federal life than the Arlington, which stood on Lafayette Square within sight of the White House. In the years around 1920, its guests included politicians and visiting families who came to see the government at work. This view is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a firm that photographed Washington streets and landmarks for postcards and souvenir views in the early twentieth century. Look for the faint streaks and blemishes across the plate, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coating over time.
