The funeral of Thomas R. Marshall, who served as vice president under Woodrow Wilson, was held at the Willard Hotel, where he had lived in the years after leaving office. Marshall died in Washington on June 1, 1925, and this glass negative records the service held the next day. The National Photo Company, which worked in the capital during the 1910s and 1920s, documented official and public events like this one. The streaks and blemishes across the plate are signs of the natural deterioration that affects many early glass negatives.
