Elephants take center stage in this color woodcut, a poster urging Pennsylvanians to visit the zoo. Hugh Stevenson of Philadelphia designed it for the state's WPA Federal Art Project around 1936 or 1937, and a date stamp on the back reads August 4, 1937. Like many Depression-era WPA posters, it promoted a public amenity, and its bold blocks of color show why woodcut suited inexpensive, eye-catching notices. Philadelphia's zoo, founded in 1874, was among the first in the nation.
