A WPA silkscreen that puts the pandas front and center, this poster advertises Brookfield Zoo, the suburban Chicago zoo that opened in 1934 and was built to be a open-moat, naturalistic home for animals. Its title points readers toward the Chicago elevated train, which made the trip from the city an easy outing for families during the Depression. The Federal Art Project produced posters like this to promote public attractions and to give working artists paid employment. The print bears a June 1938 date stamp on its back, placing it in the late years of the New Deal arts programs.
