Few posters of the period tie city planning so directly to germs, and this one, a silkscreen print from the Federal Art Project's New York office, makes the link its whole argument: good housing as public health. The New York City Housing Authority, under Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and Commissioner Langdon W. Post, commissioned it in the late 1930s, when the city was building some of the first publicly financed housing in the country. Slum conditions, overcrowding and tuberculosis were a common pairing in public debate then, which helps explain why the agency wanted its message aimed at disease rather than only at architecture.
