Stamped on the back with a September 7, 1939 date, this silkscreen poster from the Illinois unit of the Federal Art Project takes the newspaper as its subject, a fitting choice for a moment when the war in Europe was filling front pages. Germany had invaded Poland on September 1, and Britain and France declared war within days, so American readers were following fast-breaking news from overseas. The title, *Behind the headlines*, points to the poster's aim of looking past the rush of headlines toward what the news meant. Posters like this were made under the New Deal's Work Projects Administration, which employed artists to produce public-information graphics.
