A silkscreen poster from 1937 that turns the sewing trade into its own subject, with the Cincinnati setting named right in the record. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, commissioned work like this during the Great Depression, when federal programs employed artists to produce posters that publicized community services and workplaces. The verso date stamp of June 20, 1937, places the piece in the middle of that program's most active years of poster production. Its subject, labor in a garment-related trade, reflects how the WPA poster series documented ordinary occupations across American cities.
