Few posters in the Works Progress Administration collection focus on a single skilled trade, and this one turns to tailoring in Ohio. James H. Murphy designed it under the Federal Art Project, and the back bears an October 13, 1937 date stamp. The Federal Art Project's poster unit produced many works in silkscreen, a relatively inexpensive method that let the program print bold, flat color in quantity. Its posters often promoted public programs and jobs, and the trades it depicted, like this one, offer a glimpse of the work that employed people during the Depression.
