Among the WPA posters on this board, this one stands out for its warning about industrial targets rather than soldiers or ships at sea. Its slogan, "Smoking stacks attract attacks," urges factory workers and the public to keep lights, smoke and loose talk in check, since enemy submarines hunted for the glow and plumes of coastal plants. The subject tags point to Japanese submarines and naval warfare in the early 1940s, a period when the United States was still at peace but was building up its defenses and production. Federal Art Project designers produced many such posters to carry safety and morale messages to a broad public.
