The slogan "Smoking stacks attract attacks" makes this silkscreen poster unusual: it turns a ship's funnel smoke into a warning that could reveal a vessel's position to an enemy. The Federal Art Project produced it under the Works Progress Administration, which employed artists to make public-information posters during the years before and during American involvement in the war. Its subject tags point to Japanese submarines, a real danger to Pacific shipping. The lower right corner is missing, so the word "Navy" that once appeared there is lost, but the bold, simplified imagery still shows how the program used graphic design to teach security to the public.
