Its title, *Under the Polar Star*, and the American flag waving amid the ice at the top of the world set it apart from the many theatrical bills of its day. The subject headings classify it as a melodrama, so the scene is a stage piece borrowing the look of an Arctic exploration story. In the 1890s, the race to reach the North Pole made headlines, and Americans followed expeditions closely, so a production that planted the flag at the pole tapped that public excitement. The lithograph came from the Strobridge Lithographing Company, a Cincinnati firm with a New York office that printed many posters of this kind.
