Here a lithographed advertisement from about 1887 turns the sled into a night-time scene: the Star toboggan is shown carrying riders down a snowy slope after dark, a combination the record's subject headings single out as winter and night recreation. Phoenix Lithograph Company of Chicago produced the color print to sell the toboggans, so its real purpose was persuasion, though it also documents how winter leisure was pictured in the 1880s. Toboggan sliding had become a popular pastime in the United States by then, and advertisers used lively, crowded scenes like this one to suggest fun and fashion. Its registration with the U.S. Copyright Office, noted on the record, shows that the design was protected as a published work.
