Few pictures in this collection show a New England village at night in late winter, and this one shows the center of Woodstock, Vermont, under snow in March 1940. Woodstock is a small Windsor County town known for its well-preserved village green and early nineteenth-century brick and frame buildings. The image belongs to the Farm Security Administration's photography project, which the federal government ran during the Depression to record rural and small-town life across the country. The project's files passed to the Office of War Information in 1942, which is why the record carries that agency's name.
