Three children are shown in the middle of throwing snowballs in this 1896 watercolor, a moment of winter play that the painter has frozen in place. Scenes of children at play in the snow were a popular subject in the late 1800s, when illustrators and painters often showed young people bundled in wool coats and caps, enjoying the cold outdoors. Watercolor suited such subjects, since its thin, translucent washes can suggest the pale light and open air of a winter day.
