Titled *The Rivals*, this chromolithograph pairs two of the season's favorite pastimes, skating and sleighing, with a courtship story: the title points to two suitors vying for the same winter companion. Printed in Philadelphia around 1869 by T. Sinclair's lithographic firm, it reflects the period's taste for colorful sentimental scenes, which were widely sold as affordable domestic decoration. Color lithography was still fairly new then, and prints like this one show how publishers used bright inks to make everyday leisure look romantic.
