Titled "Autumn eve," this color lithograph was made as a tobacco package label, one of the many decorative paper pieces that tobacco makers printed in the 1870s to catch a buyer's eye on a shop shelf. It was produced by George W. Averell's New York lithography firm and registered for copyright under the name Sanderson & Horn. The title points to a season rather than a holiday, and its image of a woman reflects the genteel figures that were a common motif on labels of the period.
