Lake George, the long lake in the foothills of the Adirondacks in eastern New York, is the setting for this hand-colored lithograph. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold inexpensive prints of American scenery, aimed views like this one at a public eager for images of the countryside and its changing seasons. The record dates the piece only to a span between 1856 and 1907, a period when the firm was at its height and coloring by hand was still common. Collectors value these prints for their color and for the way they recorded a landscape that was drawing growing numbers of travelers.
