Hues of Autumn, on the Racquet River shows a stretch of water in northern New York, a region of forest and rivers that Currier & Ives often pictured for its scenic appeal. The firm issued this lithograph in New York, and it was colored by hand, a common finishing step that let its workers vary the tones from one print to the next. Currier & Ives sold such landscapes widely to middle-class households in the late 1800s, when the autumn woods were a favorite subject. The print's warm reds and golds show why the firm's autumn scenes were so popular.
