A working farm near Farmington, Connecticut, forms the setting here, with a pond, open fields, and farm buildings shown in autumn. The color print was issued by L. Prang & Co. of Boston around 1870, reproducing a painting by James M. Hart, a Scottish-born American artist known for pastoral farm scenes. Louis Prang was a pioneer of chromolithography in the United States, and his firm made affordable color reproductions that brought landscape subjects into homes and schools. The print's soft gradations were built up from several stone impressions, each adding a layer of ink to approximate the painter's tones.
