Autumn light settles over a farm near Farmington, Connecticut, in this view of a pond, open fields, and farm buildings. Boston publisher L. Prang & Co. issued the color print around 1870, reproducing a painting by James M. Hart, a Scottish-born American artist known for pastoral landscapes and cattle. Chromolithography, which Louis Prang championed in America, used a separate stone for each color, so the russets and golds of the season were built up in layers. Prints like this one brought rural scenes into middle-class homes at a time when many Americans still lived close to the land.
