Currier & Ives issued this hand-colored lithograph, titled *Autumn*, in New York in 1871, part of the firm's long run of prints on the seasons. The record does not describe the scene, but the firm's autumn subjects typically drew on harvest, orchards, and country life that its middle-class buyers would recognize. Lithography let the firm print sheets in quantity, and the hand coloring gave each copy slightly different tones. Nathaniel Currier founded the firm in 1835, and James Merritt Ives joined him as partner in 1857.
