Madison became the capital of Wisconsin in 1836, when the territorial legislature chose it over larger rivals, a decision made partly because the site sits between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona on an isthmus. The current Wisconsin State Capitol, a granite-and-marble building topped by a gilded statue of Wisconsin, was completed in 1917 after the earlier capitol burned in 1904. A view of the city and its Capitol shows how the government center grew up around the lakes, and it is worth noticing how the dome anchors the skyline above the isthmus.
