The "New" in this title sets the building apart from the earlier capitol it replaced, which had served Lansing since the state moved its seat there in 1847. Completed in 1879 to designs by architect Elijah E. Myers, the new capitol was a statement of the state's growth in the years after the Civil War, when Michigan's lumber, mining, and manufacturing economies were expanding. Its large central dome and ornamented façade mark it as a product of the period's taste for grand public buildings. Myers later worked on several other state capitols, and the Lansing building remains the seat of Michigan's government.
