Rather than showing a working mill, this color lithograph carries the company's name as a greeting, "Compliments of Union Mills Co., Detroit," and pictures a windmill and log buildings that evoke the city's frontier past. The catalog headings date those subjects to the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when Detroit was a French fur-trading post before it became an American town. The piece was copyrighted by the Calvert Lithographing Company of Detroit around 1895, when businesses often handed out decorative prints as keepsakes. Its sentimental, old-fashioned scene reflects the 1890s taste for nostalgia as much as the early settlement itself.
