Drawn by A. Ruger and printed in Milwaukee by Beck & Pauli, this uncolored lithograph presents the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor as a panoramic view of its grounds around 1881. The university was chartered in Detroit in 1817 and moved to Ann Arbor in 1837, so by the early 1880s the campus was well established as its permanent home. Ruger, known for many such college views, drew the scene, and J.J. Stoner of Madison published it. Prints like this were popular with alumni and promoters who wanted a picture of a school in its setting.
